The studies are full-time. You complete your studies at school and we have no homework or requirements for school work at home. On the General course, you can also finish your primary school by reading General course basic level before moving on to high school level.

In the course, your learning is at the center. The goal is for you to grow through your learning and you get to work a lot on developing your study technique. You work both independently and in collaboration with others. Completed studies provide equivalent upper secondary school qualifications and basic eligibility for both university and college as well as polytechnics.

The general course at Färnebo Folkhögskola is given at our school in Gävle.

Why should I study the General course at Folkhögskola?

At Allmän kurs, we offer a varied way of working where we start from the course participants' needs, ideas, experiences and dreams.

Folkhögskolan works in a different way compared to Komvux. With us, you always study full-time, which means that you study at school from Monday to Friday.

What subjects do we study?

The subjects you study on the General Course are the same as those you study at Komvux or the upper secondary school to get a so-called general qualification. But we often read several subjects integrated within the framework of different themes.

When you start the general course, you are placed in a class and assigned a mentor. You study the high school subjects Swedish, English and mathematics as individual subjects. Swedish, history, social studies, natural sciences and religion are studied integrated within the framework of thematic studies. A theme can e.g. be food, our stories or power.

We often study a theme for five to seven weeks. This helps us see connections between different subject knowledge, and pay attention to how things are connected. Aesthetic and practical subjects are also included in the course. These subjects may be different each semester, but it may e.g. be image, music, drama or crafts.

At the school, we also regularly have common outdoor days, school gatherings where we invite different guests to the school and theme days when we work with all subjects, all classes together. We also have health care on the schedule.

The school in Gävle

Färnebo folk high school has existed since 2013 in Gävle. We work hard to ensure that everyone feels safe in their class and at the school in general. A safe environment where you can express your opinion at the same time is important for everyone to be able to perform at their best.

The school has a dining hall with microwave ovens where it is fine to eat a packed lunch. The school is a joint workplace and participants and teachers share the responsibility for it to be a good workplace for everyone and jointly take responsibility for certain daily tasks.

How do I get permission for further studies?

How long you will study depends on what you have with you from before. Previous studies/work + your studies at folk high school must correspond to three years of studies at upper secondary level. You must, however, attend at least one year of the General course at folk high school to gain basic eligibility.

In order for the Folkhögskolan to issue a certificate that you have basic eligibility, you must meet two requirements.

1. Extent requirement – requirement that you study for a certain amount of time
2. Content requirements for the university
3. Content requirements for the university of applied sciences

Ratings and reviews

As a folk high school, we do not give any grades in individual subjects, but after at least one year of study, you have the opportunity to receive a study assessment that you can use, among other things, to apply to universities and colleges.

Since we as a folk high school do not give grades, you cannot combine your study assessment from the folk high school with the upper secondary school grade. So you cannot read up grades, i.e. raise the grade point average from high school, by studying at folk high school.

When setting judgment, the following factors are taken into account:

  • Knowledge and skills and their development.
  • Ability to analyze, process and overview.
  • Ambition, perseverance and ability to organize studies.
  • Social ability.

Folkhögskolan uses a four-point scale for the study assessment: Excellent study ability (4), Very good study ability (3), Good study ability (2) or Less good study ability (1). As of autumn 2013, intermediate steps such as 3.5 or 2.5 will be introduced, which means that in practice it is a seven-point scale.

The study assessment is a summary assessment of study ability. This assessment is therefore given together with information about which qualifications you have achieved, i.e. which high school subjects you have passed. The study assessment is based on a joint assessment made by all your teachers at the school. Study assessment is only given for General courses that are at least 30 weeks long, i.e. usually one academic year.
